If you thought that Thunderball was just a 1965 James Bond Movie, let us tell you about its lottery namesake.

What is Thunderball?

Thunderball is the name of a UK National Lottery game, so called because of a bonus ‘Thunderball’ that must also be matched in order to win the jackpot. It is one of four main lotteries that are held in the UK and, although it has smaller jackpots than the others, it has a much better chance of winning.

How can I play Thunderball?

This is actually a straightforward game to play. You must select five numbers from 1-39 and then choose the Thunderball from 1-14. Draws are held four times per week- Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays- at around 8:15pm UK-time.

What are the Thunderball odds?

As we you can see here, the chances to win the Thunderball are significantly better than some other lotteries. To win the jackpot, you will need to overcome odds of 1 in 8,060,598. To win any prize, however, you have a 1 in 13 chance.

How much is the Thunderball jackpot?

The Thunderball jackpot stands at £500,000, which would be enough to buy you plenty of Martinis (shaken, not stirred). Smaller prizes begin at £3.

The history of Thunderball

The first ever Thunderball draw was in 1999. Then, it was held every Saturday and instantly proved popular with the British public. At the time, the jackpot was a smaller £250,000 but the new gameplay and lower odds of winning proved attractive.

In 2010 the game underwent some big changes. The number of balls went up from 34 to 39 and a prize was created for players who matched just the Thunderball. Most significantly though was the doubling of the jackpot prize to £500,000, where it still stands today.

With Thunderball, you are supporting good causes

Did you know that for every £1 spent on UK National Lottery games, 28p will go to The Good Causes Fund? This means that each week, more than £30,000,000 is spent on social and charitable organisations!

So when you buy your next Thunderball ticket, not only will you be giving yourself a chance to win some money, you will also be helping contribute to charitable causes.
